Hello,

A bit of help would be appreciated with this outside slip I'm making.  I'm having difficulty getting the two switch exit roads to align - instead I'm getting doubling of the rails.  A template is attached.

Grateful for any advice please as toy where I'm going wrong.

Many thanks.

Hi Alan.
The short answer is that you have two turnouts curved to very different radii. Without knowing how critical the alignment of the approach tracks are, it is difficult to say what is the best way to proceed.
However the usual approach with outside slips is to align the two turnouts albeit mirror image to each other first and then add the diamond afterwards.
Regards
Tony.

Hi Alan,

Outside slips are not straightforward, as you found. :)

Tony's method usually works for regular diamonds, but where you have an irregular diamond like this one, you can't mirror the turnouts.

Then there is nothing for it but to split the turnouts into multiple partial templates and adjust them to fit. I have done most of the work in the file below -- over to you to do any final tidying up (and the timbering of course).

Sorry, I don't have time today to write a full step-by-step recipe. I will try to do that soon.

File attached.

cheers,

Martin.

Many thanks for the replies. Martin I'll keep the file you've kindly done for me and work through it as a kind of tutorial.

Cheers … Alan

Thanks again for the help on this. I'd like to continue this by making it into a double outside slip, so I want to do the other side. However I'm stuck (again), I get to the point where I add the two switches and lengthen them to make the additional v-crossings required, but after that I can't recall how to work with partial templates so I can remove the conflicting rails where they cross the vee. I recall seeing some help on it a while ago but can't find it again now, so I'd be grateful for a pointer to any info where I can brush up again on this.

Thanks. Alan

Hi Alan,

I recall writing something recently and making a video, but I too can't find it. :?

In the meantime there is a 12-year-old post here which summarises the methods:
