Discussion of open-source computer stuff for Templot3 is tending to overwhelm Templot Club at present. Despite appearances, Templot Club is primarily for users of Templot and modellers. :)

To that end, I'm minded to change the permissions on the TemplotMEC nuts and bolts section, so that it's visible only to those members of Templot Club who want it to be visible to them.

If that includes you, please reply here to say so. Thanks.

Just to clarify, this means you want to go on seeing those posts and topics here. It doesn't mean you are required to make any contribution to them, or to the Templot open-source projects.

You can see which other members are also seeing those discussions because their user name shows in green.

I seem to remember we did something similar in the run-up to releasing Templot2.

If you are interested to join in the fun and would like to have a dabble at programming for Templot3, see:

 topic 3283

cheers,

Martin.

Thanks to everyone who replied.

You should be seeing that your name has changed from LMS Maroon to GWR Chocolate SR Green.

If so, you should see no other changes here while you are logged in.

If your name is still showing in LMS Maroon you can no longer see the lengthy discussions going on about the internal programming of Templot. Just the normal discussions about using Templot, and about railway track.

If you would like to see the computer discussions, please reply here saying so, and I will change you from Maroon to Chocolate Green. :)

If you are Chocolate Green and log out from Templot Club, you will in effect be Maroon while you are logged out. To see the computer stuff you would need to log in again.

This also means that Google will now be unable to see the computer stuff and will no longer be indexing it. So Google searching for it won't work, you will need to use the search functions here on Templot Club to find it.

The content emails for the computer stuff will no longer be distributed via YahooGroups or added to the YahooGroups archive. If you are Chocolate Green and still receive your content emails (not direct notifications) via YahooGroups, you will no longer receive them for the computer stuff that way. If you want to continue to receive content emails for the computer stuff, you need to make the appropriate settings for the TemplotMEC nuts and bolts forum, at:

 http://85a.co.uk/forum/my_account.php?watched_forums=1

Nothing in the above makes any changes to all the other stuff on Templot Club. Everyone will continue to see it and receive emails about it exactly as before.

cheers,

Martin.

Just for the hell of it  Because the GWR Chocolate wasn't too easy to read against the background on my screen.

Hi.

I have opened Templt3 but is there a way of loading Templot2 files in this version or do you have to start all over again please?

Hi Dave,

For BOX template files it is necessary to use the compatible MECBOX transfer format. That means for old files in Templot2 they need to be reloaded first in Templot2 and then exported in MECBOX format.

You can do that for individual files from the storage box, or entire folders-full of old BOX files can be exported in MECBOX format from the file viewer.

For recent files since Templot2 version 224a, when saving as BOX files they are now also exported as MECBOX files at the same time (unless you turn that option off).

Once you have a MECBOX file, it can be imported into Templot3.

More about all this and how to export and import MECBOX files at:

  topic 3555

For BGS background shapes files, they are now since Templot2 version 225b saved in BGS3 format, which can be reloaded directly in Templot3, and vice versa.

So for old BGS files, you just need to reload them in Templot2 and then save them again.

A big advantage of the new BGS3 format is that it is self-contained with any picture shapes/maps, so there is no longer any need to post separate SK81 files when attaching BGS3 files here. The trade-off against that is that they are a bit slower to load.

More technical stuff about BGS3 files at:

 topic 3561

It's not necessary to understand any of that. Just save your background shapes from the latest version of Templot2 and reload them in Templot3.

in both cases you need to navigate from Templot2's files to Templot3's files.

By default Templot2's files are at:

  C:\TEMPLOT_DEV\BOX_FILES\

By default this trial version of Templot3's files are at:

  C:\TEMPLOT_DEV\TEMPLOT3\BOX_FILES\

So you need to jump back a couple of steps in Templot3 to find files from Templot2.

And likewise for \SHAPE-FILES\

Or wherever else you choose to save your Templot files of course.

This is all still new and experimental, so if any problems please let me know. Thanks.

For the time being you probably want to stick to Templot2 for actual work.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin, I'm guessing I have to be on this list to view the TemplotMec forum (I currently see "Sorry, you do not have permission to view this section." when I click on the TemplotMec button)?

If so: could you please add me to the list too :). I'm interested in potentially contributing to the open source version too (I've managed to get Templot compiling and running on Linux locally, although it's far from being in usable state so far as I've commented out some parts of the code dealing with images and xml files and haven't implemented Linux equivalents for those parts yet).

Hi Andrew,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

You are now green and should be able to see the T3 discussions.

There was a flood of posts back at the start of the year but it has since gone very quiet (again).

It would be great to see what you have been doing with the code.

cheers,

Martin.

Six months ago Templot Club was over-run with discussions about programming the open-source version of Templot -- Templot3 (T3).

Since then it has gone very quiet, so there seems no longer any reason to keep the TemplotMEC nuts and bolts section hidden from members who haven't specifically asked to see it:

 http://85a.co.uk/forum/view_forum.php?id=26

So for now I have reverted the permissions, and there is now no difference between SR Green members and BR Maroon. :)

If it gets too busy again I will think about hiding it again.

cheers,

Martin.
