Does anybody have any ideas regarding bending flat bottom rail ?I have been trying to bend rail ( codes from 82 to 143 ) before spiking to timbers. It seems to me quite difficult to get a constant radius and also not twist the rail when bending to tighter radii. This is for narrow gauge layouts in G scale, 1:32 and 1:43 scales. I use rails with a 'proper' profile rather than just one of the correct height so the rail head and foot are quite wide.

Thanks
Rob

Hi Rob,

You could try making something like this. Some sort of guide to keep the rail flat on the base would be a help to prevent FB rail twisting.

Thanks Martin/John,

The US model is rather expensive ( around £130 inc shipping and Taxes ) but would probably be great.

I have posted on RMweb here to see what the GW one is like.

Thanks
Rob

Hi Bruce,

Sorry, slip of the tongue, I do know there is another country or two on your side of the water :)

I liked Vancouver especially Grouse Mountain nearby. My mum's sister went to live in Vancouver. Never been back to your country since, shame.

Photo is just to show the GW device, in use it should be in a more substantial vice.
I've measured the grooves at 1.6mm wide by 2mm deep and 1.3mm wide by 1mm deep.

I've never used it for rail but bullhead looks easy: could flat bottom be done by just having the rail foot in a groove? Ideally one would turn a groove to suit the rail profile, but if one can do that it would be better to build a unit from scratch completely.

I read somewhere recently that the rolls should impinge on the rail's web.
