I am trying to make  curved turnout template. I set the radius of the main line and minimum radius of 1200mm warning. In the information panel I get the switch and turnout curve radii and also a  smallest radius on template figure. What does this last figure refer to?

Graham,

The smallest radius will be just that. Your main running line will be radius X, your turnout curve radius will be Y. The smallest radius IIRC is between the crossing vee and the switch heel. If you change the crossing vee from Regular to Generic, you will see this minimum value change.

I'm sure Martin or others will be able to explain more fully.

Hi Graham,

Welcome to Templot Club. :)

Here's a diagram for a turnout with a regular type V-crossing:

The smallest radius now figure shows whichever of these radii is the smallest.

According to the various turnout settings, and the main road curving, it could be any of them.

However, the switch radius is not usually smaller than the turnout radius. In some turnout sizes, called natural turnouts, it is the same as the turnout radius. These sizes are A-7, B-8, C-10 ...

Here is a case where the smallest radius is in the main road. This might be the inner turnout in a curved crossover for example:

More info and diagrams for other types of V-crossing are at:

Martin.

Thanks for your reply. I understand the mainroad and turnout radii. My query related to a mention of minimum radius unrelated to these radii that was found somewhere in the info window. I was just playing around with programme and did not keep it. I have done a another template and this time the turnout radius is the same as the minimum radius as I would expect. I don't have a clue what I did or misread in my first attempt but I think my issue is resolved.

Hi Graham,

It is important to understand that the turnout radius might not be the smallest. I have edited my previous reply with another diagram to show this.

cheers,

Martin.
