The latest Templot program update is now available. Version 226e. :)

Your copy of Templot should update automatically if you restart it and follow the instructions.

If you have the Templot Video Player open, please close it first.

If you have any problems with updating, see the download and notes at:

 http://templot.com/companion/installation.php

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the update although not sure what has changed just yet. The program crashes for me when using the 'new' TS spacing tool. I hadn't tried it in the last version so don't know if all was well then.

I seem to be able to fire up Templot and make a change to the track spacing by moving the slider and accepting the value but if I dither around on the slider moving it around for a short while I get an error from Windows.

Have tried to upload screen shots but Templot Club just sits there. First screenshot attached also noticed the PC CPU use spike just as the crash occurs - see next post for the screenshot.

Sorry in a bit of a rush - supposed to be cooking the evening meal :(

Rob

Hi Rob,

Thanks for reporting this. I can see in the code the possibility exists for a race condition, I will have a think about how best to prevent that.

On the other hand, I can't actually reproduce the problem here, on several systems. It is also exactly the same code as is used for the fast slider on the storage box:

which has been unchanged for 20 years, without any previous similar reports. :?

Can you make it happen on there?

In the meantime you can set the spacing by clicking on the blue ft numbers, or by clicking or holding down the arrow buttons. Or click the set other centres buttons to revert to the previous direct method.

I can also see that I have missed a trick by not implementing the keyboard arrow keys for this, so 226f here we come... :)

Thanks again.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Rob,

No matter how much I jiggled the slider or how fast I moved it, I couldn't get Templot's CPU use above 25%.

However, that's still rather high, so I have put a 50mS delay in the loop, which keeps it below 8%. It makes dragging the slider a bit clunky, but in any event I think the other methods are easier and quicker to use.

To which end I have added the option to use the keyboard arrow keys, which works very well and for me is the easiest and quickest. I can't understand why I didn't do that in the first place. :?

Unless anyone else reports the problem, I think I will leave this bug-fix until the next update in due course, rather than rush out yet another update now.

Thanks again for reporting it.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,
Thanks for your insight into the problem. I can't replicate the crash using the Storage Box slider :)

When using the track spacing dialogue there is no problem if I just click on the 6ft-7ft-8ft numbers. If I move the slider quickly from 6ft to 7ft or 8ft etc and leave it alone it is fine. The problem only shows when I either move the pointer quickly in a random fashion or if I move it very slowly across from 6ft and the crash occurs when I get around the 8ft mark.

Tonights exciting system status report attached.

Rob

Thanks Rob.

I've replaced the chunky slider with a draggable red marker:

That's not a Windows control, so I've been able to reduce the timer to 10 mS without the CPU usage going any higher. Which means the dragging is now as smooth as before.

It's a serious bug in that it crashes Templot, so even though I haven't been able to cause it to happen here I will probably release yet another update with this fix quite soon.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,

Sorry to have caused you more work but I suspect you would want it fixed ASAP once you know it is there :( - I guess nobody else has tried it.

Hi Martin,

Just tried version 226e on a laptop ( having upgraded from 217 !! ) and the track spacing dialogue box crashes in the same way as my main desktop.

Hi Rob,

I have now been able to replicate this on my Windows7 system. Which is good, because it means I can confirm that my changes have fixed it.

It's caused not by moving the mouse too quickly, which I assumed, but by holding the mouse down on the slider and not moving it, or moving it very slowly. Also there is a clear difference between Windows7 and Windows10 on this, so I assume Microsoft fixed something somewhere along the way.

Thanks again for finding it, I will get 226f released shortly. now on the server

cheers,

Martin.
