If you've been following Julian's topic on Kyle of Lochalsh you will know there has been some discussion about the rail joint marks in the stock rails at the V-crossing exits.

I thought it was about 2 years ago that I temporarily removed them, for what reason I had forgotten, so I thought it was about time I did something about it.

How wrong can you be? :? When I look in the code I find it was actually 20 years ago!

// stock rail joints at crossing temporarily removed 28-3-2000
// nearly always wrong at crossovers
// until fixed use manual markup on printed templates

I'm always very wary of modifying code so old, because I just know that I will have forgotten about some essential consideration or complication that needs to be allowed for.

But I shouldn't be so feeble-brained, and what else are two drizzly grey days for? :)

So I have dived in and made some changes, here's a clip of scruff video:

(The same method will be used to set the position of droppers and isolation gaps which I'm working on.)

It will now be possible to put the joints in the right place at crossovers, to preserve the standard length of vee rails on each turnout. This quite often results in the joint being behind the check rails, but avoids having a joint between the special crossing chairs if the vee splice rail was to be shortened instead:

In 227a coming soon.

cheers,

Martin.
