I have just posted this reply to a topic on the Scalefour forum. It may be of interest here. utils > dummy vehicle menu item: 2_171751_120000000.png  1. set the dummy vehicle dimensions.... 2. roll it along the template, or generate a full envelope (yellow/violet band). 3. set a suitable dimension for the platform front edge spacing..., to clear. There isn't currently a mouse action adjustment for that, I will look at adding one in the next program update. p.s. Note that when adjusting the front edge, the platform width remains unchanged. So the rear edge moves also. Set the front edge before setting the width. cheers, Martin. |

Hi Martin I am not sure of the definition of "front edge spacing". I think it is the distance from track centre to the closest part of the platform edge. Is this right? If I understand correctly the dummy vehicle clearance is the distance between the coach and the platform edge. So I suppose the question I was really asking is what would be the maximum setting for this clearance so as to look convincing. Again if I understand correctly I should zoom in as far as possible to ensure the blue line on dummy vehicle doesn't hit the platform outline. I have set the platform front edge to the default 57" and the dummy vehicle clearance to 6" which I gather are prototypical distances. There is a small clearance on a 20 chain radius using dummy settings for worst possible situation i.e 70' coach with a width of 9' |

Is this right?Hi Graham, Yes 57" is the prototypical distance for UK standard-gauge from the track centre-line to the platform edge, on straight track. It has to be increased on curved track for bogie vehicles. The dummy vehicle clearance is a purely model allowance for practical purposes, mainly for checking running clearance on curved double track. The prototypical running clearance envelope is a complex calculation related to line speed, radius, and track cant. Model vehicles tend to be more "wobbly" than the prototype, and model curves much sharper, so we can't easily convert directly from prototype practice. The dummy vehicle clearance is set to 6" scale by default. That's just my guess of a suitable practical dimension. It means that if you ensure the dashed clearance lines do not clash on curves, there will be a minimum of 12" scale between vehicles (i.e. 4mm in 00/EM/P4). You can change the clearance to whatever you think appropriate for your models, click the dimensions... button. You can also adjust it by mouse action, which is a handy way of measuring the distance from vehicles to fixed objects. More info: http://templot.com/companion/dummy_vehicle_tool.php cheers, Martin. |
