The tests for the Virtual Scaleforum on Saturday reminded me that a few years ago I tried broadcasting my Templot screen as a way of providing quick Templot help and support instead of writing long replies and making screenshots and videos.

It wasn't very successful then, but browser tech and broadband seems to have improved a bit since, so I have had another go. So far it seems to be working quite well, at least here. If you go to this link right now:

 https://templot.com/companion/live_screen.php

you should be able to see Templot running. You can tell it's live because the red radius warning indicator should be flashing. If not, try pressing CTRL+F5 to refresh the page. Allow 20 seconds or so before anything much happens.

From time to time for the next few hours I will dabble with it just to see how well it works.

Please report if it is working for you, the image quality, etc. Thanks.

p.s. this is not using Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, Instazoomgram, or any other MegaCorporation harvesting your hat size. You don't need to register, sign in, give your email address or any information at all. It's running on a small UK-based streaming service, and displayed on the Templot web site.

cheers,

Martin.

Interesting idea!
For those on an iPad, there is no Ctrl-F5 to press, of course.  Tapping on the video window got the round doughnut spinning, then clicking the ‘Live’ button bottom left got the red radius warning flashing!

I’ll have a look on a Windows computer to tomorrow, although I realise there may not be a live session going at any given time.  So long as it’s not you doing online banking as a live broadcast!

Cheers,
Paul

Thanks Paul.

I've now noticed that for reasons known only to the screen capture software, the mouse cursor is in the wrong place. That's going to make demonstrations interesting! If I can't find a fix I shall have to make a big arrow which I can push around the screen. :)

It's probably related to the screen DPI setting.

The streaming and receiving back is driving my system quite hard at around 38% CPU, but it seems happy at that.

cheers,

Martin.

p.s. the audio is off by default. To test it on, click the green loudspeaker button bottom left of the video. At present the microphone is picking up from my system speakers.

Hi Martin,
I can see the 'Live' screen with the radius warning flashing ( just so you know somebody other than Paul is here :) )

The display doesn't show a whole screen. Is it supposed to ? I can see the 'Swel' ( but not the rest of the button ) in the top right and down bottom left I can see just below the centre of the switch operating linkage.

Rob

Thanks Rob.

Currently no, the capture size is set to 1236 wide so that it fits the Companion page format (intended for 1280-wide screens, with browser borders). If I reduce the trackpad window size to 1236, at my current menu font size, the menu bar breaks to 2 lines, which would confuse everyone.

I have just now moved the window across a bit, but now we have lost the grid Y-axis. I will get these cosmetics fixed in due course.

At the bottom you should be seeing just 450mm as the X-dimension. I've set the capture height to 824 (3:2 ratio). It can be anything, but I have to keep in mind that some folks have smallish screens, and I need to keep the CPU usage within sensible bounds. (Currently streaming at 2.0 Mbps, 38% total CPU).

How does the image quality look on your screen? The longer I have left it running the better it's got here. With source and stream side by side there is not much in it -- the stream would be quite usable for normal work. It's better than the FlashBackConnect videos.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for the screenshot. That does look fine.

But it's only about 1090 wide, so presumably you have zoomed out a bit in the browser?

How does that size compare with how Templot looks when you are using it normally?

Looking promising, much better than last time I tried this.

How's the audio volume? With the green volume slider set to about 50%, and your system set similar, it should be about right for normal listening.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin,
My screen resolution is 1920x1080 so the live stream is a good deal smaller but still fine for it's intended purpose.

The audio is very quiet. Setting the slider upto full I have to turn my physical speaker knob way up to hear anything and I can't even make out what the music is.

Off to bed now. Far too late to be staring at a screen, much better to stare at a whiskey glass :D

Hi Godders,

All in good time. :)

First we need to establish if it works. And how many can be watching before the quality goes too far downhill. I've subscribed for up to 200 simultaneous users, but I suspect that is hopelessly optimistic for decent image quality. But it ought to be ok for a dozen or so.

Then we need to know if anyone is actually watching with interest.

And finally we need someone to ask a question.

What I hope won't happen, but often tends to, is that instead of talking about the actual subject, the whole time is taken up discussing who can see it, who can't, what they might be doing wrong, and how to fix it.

So I'm leaving it running for a few hours while the paint dries, to find out who can and can't see it. At least well enough to be usable.

cheers,

Martin.

Thanks Charles.

How does the image quality compare with Templot when you are using it normally? It can't ever be as good after H.264 streaming, but hopefully it's not too bad. Unfortunately there's no lossless streaming service available that I can find.

For size you can zoom your browser to suit your screen.

cheers,

Martin.

Hi Martin.
The picture is clear enough here, but I don't get the full screen width. That is probably down to the screen resolution on my laptop. Before you ask, there is no horizontal slider available.

Tony.

PS It now seems to be working fine and I can see all the screen.

Thanks Tony,

I'm not broadcasting the full trackpad width. If I do that, it won't fit the Companion web page format for users with 1280-wide screens. If I reduce the trackpad width to fit, the menu bar breaks into two lines, and some of the tool-buttons are cut off -- as you can see now.

The easiest solution for now is to crop the trackpad left and right to fit.

If this concept takes off, I can produce a customized version of Templot to suit broadcasting better.

cheers,

Martin.

Unfortunately I will miss both the Scaleforum video extravaganza and also your contribution to expanding my Templot knowledge, but me and the girlfriend are having a weekend away, it was originally going to be in Aylesbury, but when the show was cancelled, we/she decided on Gloucester, a place that I used to travel through in the days before the M5, but never actually stopped and visited.

Thanks for all the feedback. It seems that the technology is good for us, so now we need to put it to use, and I see Danny Cockling has added me as a postscript to the Virtual Scaleforum show tomorrow:  :)

 https://www.scalefour.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=78726#p78726

I'm proposing to start the proceedings, if they can be called such, at about 7pm and continue for most of the evening. I shall be dabbling with Templot and nattering about what I'm doing. If you have any questions or help requests please post them in this topic or on the Scalefour forum, and I will try to answer them.

To try out the format and learn from mistakes I shall be doing the same at various times this evening, but I can't say when or for how long.

Here's the link again:
