I have a track plan, with baseboard outlines as background shapes plus a JPG image as the background map.
Without the image all my shapes are shown when loaded from the .bgs file but as soon as I load the image file it covers the baseboard outlines and I cannot see what settings in the shapes dialog to change to prevent this happening. I really need to see the baseboard outlines and the map to be able to adjust the track plan to avoid awkward track splits on the joins.

What am I missing here?

Hi,

Background shapes are drawn on the screen in the order listed.

To see your other shapes over the map, you need to draw the map first:

1. select the picture shape.

2. use the brown arrow buttons to move shapes up and down in the list. In this case you need to move the map to the top of the list.

For a map with solid black tracks on white, you will find it much easier to work over if you reduce the contrast. With the picture shape selected in the list, click the modify shape tab > low-contrast button. If the contrast is still too high you can repeat the process. Probably you will want the light grey option. More about using this function in this clip:

You may also want to have the grid lines in front of the shapes, for which you can tick the box. (But where your baseboard outlines match the grid lines, they will then be obscured by the grid lines unless you increase the shapes line thickness.)

To change the shapes colour and line thickness, click the font/colours options tab.

An alternative to changing the order of the shapes would be to display the map transparent over the other shapes -- tick the show transparent box. But note that this makes the screen response and zooming very much slower, and may restrict how far you can zoom in. (This is all Windows and system related, beyond Templot's control.)

n.b. for show transparent, only the white option will work for the low-contrast function.

cheers,

Martin.
