I have a layout plan based on 5 long narrow boards that are set an an angle to each other so that they form five sides of an octagon. I have the baseboards drawn as background shapes.

Each board should print out on 4 A4 sheets of paper but Templot wants to print out 32 pages many of which would be mostly blank and would be a pain to paste together.

I thought about grouping all the templates together and rotating them in order to align each board in turn with the paper but it doesn't seem possible to include the background shapes with the grouped items so I would lose the board alignment.

I have also looked for a way to move the location of the printed pages around the pad but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this.

Does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to accomplish this?

On a related note, even though I have ticked the option to include background shapes in the print out, Templot does not offer to print a page that contains only a background shape but no track. I'm not sure if this is intentional or a bug.

I have also looked for a way to move the location of the printed pages around the pad but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this.
SHIFT+CTRL+F10 move page origin mouse action to do it by eye, or print > page orientation / origin > set page origin... menu item to set the page origin at a specific location on the grid.

It's intentional, not to print pages which don't contain track. Easily defeated -- just add a short bit of dummy template on any empty page you want printed. I do mean short. A "centre-line only" template which is only 1mm long will be almost invisible.

You can rotate all the background shapes, but it has to be done separately from the templates. It's therefore necessary to do it by entering the angle directly, rather than by mouse action, so that you can enter the same angle exactly for both.

Unfortunately, when rotated, circle shapes will become elliptical and rectangles will lose any infill.

Also, grouped templates rotate around the notch, background shapes rotate around the spacing-ring. You must therefore ensure that these coincide before you begin: tools > spacing-ring > jump ring to > notch.

Before you do anything, make sure you have saved .box and .bgs files, because there is no undo option available on this:

1. save .bgs file.

2. delete all the background shapes which you don't want rotated.

3. on the background shapes dialog, click the modify all tab.

4. click the rectangles to lines button. read the notes which appear.

5. click the rotate all by... button. read the notes which appear.

6.  enter the angle to rotate by, and make a note of it.

7. save a .bgs file.

8. add back the first .bgs file if you want the unrotated shapes, and delete any now unwanted duplicate ones.

For the templates:

9. group > rotate group by... menu item. Enter the same rotation angle as before.

10. SHIFT+CTRL+F10 mouse action to get the page outlines where you want them, as explained above.

Hope this helps, as an alternative to all that, you could instead export a DXF file and do your rotating and printing in a CAD program.

regards,

Martin.

Thanks. Rotating the templates and background shapes separately looks like it will work.

It would be nice to be able to group select background shapes as well though :-)
