Martin,

When doing a lot of measuring with the ruler,  I find it a bit of a chore having to continually select a menu,  then a sub menu to choose to move one or other of the ruler ends.  I've searched to see if there are keyboard shortcuts for both operations,  but I haven't found them yet.  :)

If there aren't any,  and you don't have any more key combinations spare,  would it be possible to bring up a small dialogue box when you select to unhide the ruler which lets you select the end you want to move quickly on screen.

Hi Jim,

You do know that (with the ruler visible) ALT+LEFT CLICK sets one end of the ruler at the mouse position, and ALT+RIGHT CLICK sets the other end? CTRL+FULL STOP changes the mouse pointer to cross-hairs for accurate positioning first.

There are no free shortcuts left :( , but for the mouse actions from the menu, the accelerator key sequence is ALT+L,R,1  or  ALT+L,R,2 .

With the mouse actions in force, you can click the triangle symbol on the mouse action panel to quickly change ruler end, and BACKSPACE always re-starts the most recent mouse action.

I'll see if I can find some direct shortcuts, but the above covers most requirements. :)

regards,

Martin.

Martin,

I just knew that was going to happen :)   I searched through the help files the other night to see if there were shortcuts and couldn't find anything. :)   ALT + Left or Right is just as quick,  if not quicker, than clicking a button in a dialog box,  so I'll go with that.

Hi Jim,

This always worries me. :? The ruler instructions are on this page:

http://www.templot.com/martweb/pug_info_1.htm

And that is the very first result if you click the Search button above, select Detailed Site Search, and then enter "ruler".

I don't know how to make things easier to find. :? When/if the web site is ever finished I can put direct web links in the program, but until then the Search function has to suffice.

regards,

Martin.

Martin,

I went to the Templot Companion page and used the "Keyboard Shortcuts" menu on the left hand side,  and I dug around on the links on that page.  I've just re-visited the page and see that it appears to apply to 0.74,  so maybe the ruler stuff came later.  I didn't try the search facility.

Following on - I also used the Help/Shortcut key list on 0.91c and that seemed to be the same as my searches on the web site.

Hi Jim,

Yes. The thing is, ALT+LEFT and RIGHT aren't actually shortcuts to something else, they are functions in their own right. They don't appear anywhere else. So logically they don't appear in a list of "shortcuts".

But I agree it's confusing. Your idea of a separate dialog for the ruler (similar to the spacing-ring tool) is a much better solution. Heaven knows when I might have time to do it though. :(

In the interim I'll add a ? help menu item for the ruler -- it ought to have been there all along. Sorry about that.

But that's what this forum is for. Can I urge folks to ask here straightaway if you can't find things? Always search first of course, but if you can't find the answer just ask. :)

regards,

Martin.
